Parco Ungaretti - Castelvecchio

NB: The wedding ceremony and the reception dinner will be held at the same lovely location. This allows everyone to easily move from celebrating the start of our marriage to enjoying a festive dinner together.

The Castelvecchio estate extends over a plateau 145 meters above sea level, it is the first karst rise from the Isonzo di Sagrado and opens up to the the Alps to the north and the Adriatic Sea to the south.

The rich landscape provides stunning 360° views which merge with the noble and ancient origins of the town Castelnuovo di Sagrado. The Villa Della Torre in Valsassina-Hofer-Hohenlohe can still be admired as evidence of the long history of the place, together with its suggestive park of cypresses, yews and centuries-old oaks.

The Karst and the Isonzo were the scene of very hard battles during the Great War. On this plateau, the young infantryman Giuseppe Ungaretti was thrown into the trenches of the Karst. There he found in the pauses of the battles the inspiration for his essential verses which he defined “carved into my life as an abyss”.

During the Great War, the first six battles of the Isonzo were fought on the estate. Also known as the battles of Castelnuovo. The Villa became a hospital for those who could not be transported and a large military camp stood within the woods. On the walls of the halls of the Villa graffiti made by the soldiers are preserved to this date.

The ancient battlefields have now been converted into vineyards and olive groves with tireless human industriousness. The Terraneo family has been carrying out an agricultural, agritourism, historical and cultural development project since 1986, with passion and constant dedication.
